Laborie GI Hands-On Workshop 2023

26 Jul 2023

Laborie and the Malaysian Society of Gastroenterology & Hepatology recently conducted a hands-on training at University Malaya Medical Center, Kuala Lumpur.  The purpose of said course was to help attendees gain knowledge of upper and lower GI function testing, through understanding the theoretical workings of these tests and their practical applications.

We also wanted our attendees to become better acquainted with the Laborie measurement systems. The training and hands-on sessions helped equip them with the latest techniques & technologies including Oesophageal High-Resolution Manometry (with Chicago Classification 4.0), Impedance-pH monitoring (with Lyon consensus), and High-Resolution Anorectal Manometry (with London Protocol and Classification).

Our attendees consisted of physicians, nurses and other health care professionals who had basic knowledge of oesophageal motility, impedance-pH reflux examinations & lower GI function testing.

Some of the equipment used during the hands-on included the Solar GI HRIM & HRAM and Ohmega R, ambulatory Impedance-pH recorder.THe Solar GI HRAM or High Resolution Anorectal Manometry (HRAM) is an approach measuring anorectal pressures. Besides conventional manometry displays, rapid data interpretation via contour plots can be established.

The Ohmega is a small and lightweight ambulatory system which combines Impedance recording and pH recording. As a result, the Ohmega detects reflux activity using Impedance and categorizes these reflux episodes as acidic or non-acidic (weakly acidic), using traditional pH measurement. Gas and mixed liquid/gas reflux episodes are analyzed as well.
